High Voltage Cable Box Terminations

The following Cable Jointing Manual issued by Central Networks expertly and concisely covers the steps required by the cable jointer to burn out traditional compound cable boxes ("pitch" such as Prysmian BICC G101) and re-terminate using 11kV triplex cables and Guroflex.

Pictured Below : Compound filled cable box which has been broken down and re-terminated using XLPE insulated Triplex BS7870 cable using 11kV heat shrink terminations. Prior to terminating the 11kV triplex cable the jointer should thoroughly clean the inside of the high voltage cable box, cover plates and cable glands using cable cleaning solvent wipes.

Once the 11kV triplex cable has been stripped to the recommended dimensions using appropriate triplex insulation stripping tools the cable jointer should ensure the earth wires can exit the cable box, through the heat shrink cable breakout, and then reach the cable gland bolt/earth bar. The cable jointer should not fit the heat shrink or cold shrink bushing boots at this stage but leave the cable lug exposed and tighten with torque wrench.

A layer of red mastic strip is used to over tape the triplex earth wires where the fingers of the heat shink cable breakout will seal and bond onto the earth wires. The triplex 11kV cable gland should be re-fitted and heat shrink to the heat shrink breakout. The copper earth wires on the triplex cable should be combined and inserted into the barrel of a brass shearbolt cable lug then bolted onto the substation earth bar.
