The overall rail project upgrade is due for completing in 2018 however there are many different improvements planned for the whole underground system including:

  • A new signalling system for the Northern Line completed in 2014, increasing capacity, frequency of trains and making journeys faster.

  • New air-conditioned walk-through trains continue to be introduced on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines and will be introduced on the District line from 2014.

  • Contactless payments will be available on the Underground from 2014.

  • Major projects to rebuild Tottenham Court Road, Victoria and Bond Street stations will increase capacity, add step-free access and make journeys faster.

  • Further projects to modernise the busiest stations are planned for Bank, Holborn and Camden Town which will be completed in the early 2020s.

  • An increase of the number of trains on the Jubilee and Victoria lines up to 36 trains per hour (a train every 100 seconds) in the peak hours over the next six years.

  • Boarding ramps and platform humps will be introduced at more stations to increase accessibility.

  • From 2015, a 24-hour service wil be running at weekends on core parts of five of the core lines.

  • New trains and signalling for the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City lines.

The Cable Seals Chosen For Use During The Improvements

Managing director of Roxtec UK, Graham O'Hare has said the company's cable seals are being used "because of their proven track record in protecting against multiple hazards".

O'Hare then went on to say "We offer more than the standard firestop solution. Roxtec products seal cables against fire, gas, water and vermin and can provide electromagnetic compatibility".

"Our cable penetrations are being used in relocatable equipment buildings (REBs) which sit trackside and offer a one-hour fire rating.

The seals provide a vital barrier for the cables, protecting people and infrastructure in the event of a fire".

"These REBs are absolutely critical to the efficient running of the London Underground System as they contain signalling, power, telecommunications, uninterruptible power supply systems, CCTV equipment and switchgear".

Mr O'Hare said London underground required a range of cable sealing products which will not only seal the Tube's cabling network, but also offer long-term reliability.

The seals that have been supplied are halogen free and tested according to applicable industry standards, making them perfect for an underground tunnel environment.

He added: "Installation is fast and they will also be straightforward to maintain in the coming years and can be easily upgraded if needed for future projects on the underground network, providing a great return for the capital's tax payers".
