Anti-static ducting is vitally important in improving hazardous area working conditions in the onshore and offshore oil and gas industry, including Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas.

Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges within or on the surface of a material. The Ductingcharge remains until it is able to move away by means of an electric current or electrical discharge.

Static poses extreme dangers in hazardous areas where potentially explosive atmospheres could ignite the Fire Triangle.

In zoned areas, either offshore or onshore, where there are inflammable gases or vapours or a high concentration of oxygen a spark could ignite the gases and cause an explosion.

Static electricity is a phenomenon most will have experienced; where flammable atmospheres are present, it can have devastating effects. In the petroleum industry, static electricity is a key concern for safety managers and up-to-date guidance is therefore vital.

In the UK, Regulation 5 of The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) requires a risk assessment to be undertaken to assess the likelihood that ignition sources, including electrostatic discharges, may arise in the workplace.

This requirement is based on the European ATEX 137 directive. 

To aid petroleum industry personnel in understanding these issues, the Energy Institute (EI) has recently updated its guidance, as well as the content of a training tool for safety managers. Both are the result of industry collaboration through the EI’s technical work programme.

The anti-static ducting system is a result of SA’s impressive record in developing portable EX electrical equipment, including portable ATEX heaters.

Carefully selected materials, robust design and rigorous testing combine to deliver a ducting system second to none. Using an anti-static reinforced polymer material with an integrated steel helix wire, it has been vigorously tested by an independent laboratory and passed both the anti-static and flammability tests.

Anti-static ducting system is made from anti-static, flame retardant neoprene polyester. It is reinforced with steel helix coils making it extremely durable and yet highly flexible. The ducting is available in a range of lengths and diameters and comes complete with a carry bag. A strong integral strap ensures that the ducting can be secured tight.

This ducting is fully compatable with SA fans and can also be used with our range of couplers and adaptors. This comprehensive range means that you can make a ducting system for any requirement.
