The classifications of zones within hazardous areas relate to the presence of gasses or vapours.Zone 0 is the highest risk zone and Zone 2 areas are those that only have gas or vapours present under abnormal conditions such as a leak. After Zone 2 comes non-hazardous areas which as the name would suggest, offers very little or no hazard at all.
Zone 0 | An area in which an explosive air / gas mixture is continuously present or present for a long period |
Zone 1 | An area in which an explosive air / gas mixture is likely to occur in normal operation |
Zone 2 | An area in which an explosive air / gas mixture is unlikely to occur; but if it does, only for short periods of time |
Zone 20 | An area in which a combustible dust cloud is part of the air permanently, over long periods of time or frequency |
Zone 21 | An area in which a combustible dust cloud in air is likely to occur in normal operation |
Zone 22 | An area in which a combustible dust cloud in air may occur briefly or during abnormal operation |
