T&D have supplied a major UK CHP Contractor with Roxtec ATEX certified cable transits to the Wyndford CHP Scheme in Glasgow. 

Cube Housing Association is working with Scottish Gas and SSE to deliver the £27million project on the Wyndford Estate in Maryhill over the next year.

The scheme, one of the biggest of its kind in the UK, includes installing a new district heating system and overcladding 11 multi-storey blocks to make them more energy efficient.

At the heart of the Wyndford scheme will be a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine.

The CHP uses gas to produce both electricity and hot water in a highly efficient way. The CHP will be housed within a new energy centre at the edge of the estate.

The energy centre will also house gas boilers and a large thermal store (hot water tank).

The energy centre will provide all the hot water and heating for the 1527 tenanted properties as well as the potential to supply up to 400 privately owned properties on the estate through a 5km network of brand new underground hot water pipes.

The electricity generated by the CHP will be exported to the local grid.

Popular in some European countries, the CHP system takes away the need for each home to have an individual boiler – making it an affordable, energy-efficient way of heating homes.

Similar high-quality district heating and CHP schemes have seen residents’ fuel bills reduce substantially. It is also estimated that as much as 7000 tonnes of carbon emissions will be saved every year.
