Case Study: Jain Irrigation Systems, Part Excerpt Courtesy of Financial Times, October 14, 2010 4:30pm

New irrigation systems, part of broader water resources development projects, are essential for food production and sustainable growth.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, agricultural use of water for irrigation is contingent on land resources.

In developing countries, irrigated agriculture plays a vital role in contributing to domestic food security and poverty alleviation. However, a looming water crisis across the world is forcing researchers to find ways to reduce usage.

As agriculture accounts for 70 per cent of water consumption, a number of companies have been set up with the aim of reducing the amount of water and fertiliser used in food cultivation and developing less thirsty agricultural practices.

Jain Irrigation Systems (Jains), a family-run Indian business with 6,500 employees, claims to have a deep-rooted concern for nature. “Each product is an outcome of an effort to conserve nature’s precious resources through substitution or value addition”, it says.

Jains is a public company listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and on the National Stock Exchange of India.

Anil Jain, managing director, says: “In the early 1960s, the company’s core business was agriculture. In 1980, it started making PVC pipes.

The need and the potential increased for a sophisticated and efficient irrigation system for Indian farmers. Soon after, we pioneered and set up the first manufacturing unit for micro-irrigation.”

The world’s second-largest micro irrigation company, after Israel’s Netafim, Jains makes a number of products for irrigation and piping, as well as plastic sheets, dehydrated fruit purée and juice concentrates.

Micro irrigation systems (MISs) are Jains’ biggest growth area. They have also been the largest revenue contributor, accounting for an increase of total consolidated income from 51.7 per cent in 2009 to 54.1 per cent in 2010.

MISs, which include drip systems, sprinklers, valves, water filters and plant tissue products, help use water effectively and enhance the productivity of seeds and fertiliser.

Income comes mainly from India, where in 2010 the company has recorded an increase of 5.4 per cent (65.3 per cent in 2010, as opposed to 59.9 per cent in 2009).

The remainder is equally distributed among Europe (11.9 per cent), North America (11.4 per cent) and the “Rest of World” (11.5 per cent). On March 31, it recorded a total income of Rs34,200m ($772.8m) and market capitalisation of Rs72,864m ($1.6bn).

In the recent past, to strengthen its MISs portfolio, the company has completed several overseas acquisitions, including Israel’s NaanDan, the world’s fifth-largest micro-irrigation company.

It also bought Thomas Machines, a Swiss specialist in drip irrigation lines.

“The company plans to enhance its distribution by adding new dealers and distributors to penetrate new markets, particularly in Africa, the Middle East and the east and west coasts of the US”, says Mr Jain.

Water will be a critical factor in the entire world’s sustainable growth, especially for a fast developing country such as India.

Accordingly, Jains has also undertaken a number of initiatives to conserve, reduce, recycle and harvest water.

“We are also exploring the market development and commercial viability of solar water pumps. Such pumps would enable farmers in power-deficit states or villages to improve farm productivity by using micro irrigation. The life of these solar pumps is about 20 years”, states Mr Jain.
