Lucy Zodion Vizion CMS - 3 Case Studies

Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council

As a consequence of the Climate Change Act 2008, all Local Authorities are under great pressure form The Government to reduce CO2, to which end Carbon Trading commenced in April 2011.

Government targets in relation to Carbon emissions are 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050.

The Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council street lighting equates to around 21% of the councils overall energy bill.

Lucy Zodion’s Vizion central management system uses wireless technology to manage, monitor and control street lighting.

Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council

It acts as a communication system for controlling street lighting via the internet as well as serving as a monitoring tool, so that Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council can see where there may be potential problems.

For example, the remote monitoring and reporting function identifies any faulty or failing lights remotely, this enables Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council to be able to plan efficiently and effectively the maintenance regimes.  It also minimises manual night scouting.

Other advantages are that the Vizion system minimises day burners and uses the WiMAC technology for controlling school flashers and Christmas decorations, especially LED Pea Lights.

Furthermore Lucy Zodion’s Vizion system is also able to produce reports to include details about efficiency savings and energy consumption.

As part of its targets to reduce CO2, Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council has 15,100 existing lanterns that can be retrofitted.

By purchasing the necessary variable lighting level ballasts, nodes, collectors and server, Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council is able to deliver 46% of stock over a period of four years thus resulting in a carbon saving of approximately 1,466 tonnes.

The remaining stock of 18,554 lanterns will be reviewed over the next three years these are expected to result in a carbon saving of approximately 965 tonnes.

North East Lincolnshire Council

North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC), which is responsible for around 19,000 street lights, was looking for an environmentally friendly, energy saving street lighting system.

It called on the expertise of Lucy Zodion to help it to choose a system that would meet it needs and provide tangible results.

NELC chose to use Lucy Zodion's Vizion central management system to manage a cross section of its street lights as part of a trial.

North East Lincolnshire Council

An initial 200 Nodes were fitted to selected street lights in and around the streets of North East Lincolnshire. These Nodes communicate with a Collector, which then feeds data gathered into the Vizion system.

The trial has so far been a success for NELC. The Vizion Central Management System offers reliability and safety benefits along with providing the Council with greater control over the portion of its lighting stock that has been included in the trial.

For example, the remote monitoring and reporting function identifies any faulty lights remotely, so NELC’s lighting inspectors no longer have to patrol the streets on which the trial is taking place on foot at night.

Cleethorpes Festive Lights

NELC council also chose to use Lucy Zodion’s Vizion central management system to manage the switching on and off of all the festive lights in Cleethorpes.

The festive lights at Cleethorpes are turned on five times a year including Christmas and Easter and during other key holiday periods.

Cleethorpes Festive Lights

Prior to the installation of Vizion, NELC used an analogue system that required the labour intensive manual switching on and off of lights.

With Vizion this is now all done centrally and remotely via a laptop or computer.

The NELC council has not only reduced costs in terms of labour but it has eliminated the need to employ a contractor to undertake this time consuming work.
