Silver Fox cable labels have been specified and installed by the Murphy Group to provide reliable and durable cable labelling and identification of cable cores on tunnel machines.

The Silver Fox cable labels have been used to mark and identify all power and control cables and conductors.

The Murphy Group tunnel machine, type Caterpillar MP116SE Series 11600 TBM, has excavated a total 1,271m through London Clay at an average depth of around 28m, prior to arriving in a 7.5m reception shaft.

The project is part of the National Grid 132kV extra high voltage power upgrade to London's electricity infrastructure.

The Murphy Group purchased the Silver Fox Fox-in-a-Box Advanced Labelling Kit which includes a Plug'N'Play Thermal Printer, Labacus Innovator Advanced Software, Thermal Ribbon, Sample Thermal Labels and Free Technical Support.

The Silver Fox Fox-in-a-box is an ideal, cost-effective solution for printing large volumes of cable labels and prints.

The Murphy Group requested Silver Fox Legend Zero Halogen Low Smoke Grade Heatshrink Thermal Cable Labels, Fox-Flo Tie-on Cable Labels and Legend 2-part Labelling System Labels.

The Silver Fox Legend Zero Halogen Low Smoke Grade Heatshrink is a flattened, printable single wall matt polyolefin heat-shrinkable tubing for all your identification purposes from single cables to complete cable trees.

The Silver Fox heatshrink tubing is flexible, flame-retardant and has a low smoke index.

The Silver Fox Fox-Flo tie-on cable labels are low-smoke, zero-halogen and UV-stable. The tie-on cable labels are made using the highest quality materials offering long-term endurance and reliability.

The Fox-Flo tie-on labels are both strong and flexible and ideal for using on the Murphy Group Tunnel Boring Machine projects.

The Silver Fox tie-on Fox Flo cable labels are authorised for use for London Underground Limited projects and suitable for any applications where LSZH is specified.

The Silver Fox Legend 2-part Labelling system label fits inside a 2-part labelling system tube which acts as a carrier and also protects the ident.

The tail of the 2-part cable label is pulled through the tube then torn or cut after insertion leaving the label in the tube.

Murphy Group News : TBM Bernice Successfully Breaks Through At Willesden - 10th December 2012

The Willesden tunnelling team of J. Murphy & Sons Limited has successfully completed breaking through on the Willesden to Taylors Lane Deep Cable tunnel project in North London for UK Power Networks.

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) nicknamed Bernice, weighing 56 tonne arrived at the Willesden reception shaft on 4 December.

The Lovat TBM advanced the tunnel by an average of 16m every 10 hour shift and successfully navigated several 70m radius bends.

The 2.59m ID tunnel will house four new 132,000-volt cable circuits which will link between two substations upgrading electrical supplies in the area.

Darren Ramsay, Tunnelling, Civils & Power Managing Director, said ‘This is a major milestone for our tunnelling team in 2012. The tunnel has been delivered safely, on time and budget in close collaboration with UK Power Networks’.

The completed 1271m of tunnel saw the TBM excavating through London Clay at a depth of approx 28m deep prior to arriving into a 7.5m reception shaft that had been previously constructed within the National Grid Sub Station, Acton Lane. The tunnel passed underneath 11 Network Rail lines.

The tunnel drive averaged 16m for every 10 hour shift. The TBM navigated several challenging 70m radius bends along the route requiring sections of the TBM belts to be shortened to manoeuvre the TBM around the tunnel curves.

In November Murphy Tunnelling division achieved 2 million man-hours worked over five and a half years without a RIDDOR reportable injury.

This success has been underpinned by our Safety & Culture Change Programme and our employees’ commitment to Health & Safety.
