Here the HV cable fault was located, excavated, spiked and jointed - the 11kV underground cable located on UK utility's SSE network was a traditional 95sqmm PICAS cable transition jointed onto modern technology polymeric (XLPE) insulated cable.

"I think the cause of high voltage cable fault was bad backfill and a stone had pushed into the cable outer sheath causing the fault overtime - we used the good old EA Cable Sniffer to detect the underground cable fault, the best bit of kit a cable jointer could own," comments Jim. 

Once the PICAS cable fault had been located and excavated a Accles Shelvoke cartridge cable spiker was driven through the HV electricity cable effectively short circuiting the power and making the cable dead and therefore safe for the jointers to work on.

Cable cleaning wipes are ideal for dirty hands and cleaning bitumen from the PICAS cable and cores once heated prior to installing the heat shrink cable joint.
