T&D have supplied Catu Arc Flash Protective Clothing Kits to electrical engineers working for Land & Marine Project Engineering Ltd at the St Fergus Gas Terminal, Scotland. The arc flash protective clothing is rated up to 65 cal to enable safer working by electrical engineers carrying out maintenance on low and high voltage switchboards and switchgear.

When electric arc danger exists, heat-resistant clothing must be worn. The arc's characteristics are given by the resistance value of the free arc, expressed in cal/cm² according to NFPA70 E, ASTM standards, and IEC 61482-1-1 or the protection class (1 or 2) with a constrained arc according to IEC 61482-1-2.

The level of arc flash protection needed is determined by the following:

  • Maximum fault current value
  • Phase/ground rated voltage at the site of the risk
  • Distance between the source of the arc and the reception surface
  • AC cycle number and the mono or three-phase circuit type
  • Location where the arc is produced (confined space)

The personal protective clothing needed for workers on the St Fergus Gas Terminal was the CATU 65 cal/cm² arc flash protective kit.
