Recently, 21 number 3M 94AP430-3/C Quick Splice 2000 Cold Shrink cable joints have been installed to joint 8 kilometres of 33kV 3 core polymeric cable with individual copper screens and lead sheaths.

The project for Rumaila oil field operated by BP in conjunction with China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), has estimated reserves of around 17 billion barrels and produces the largest single contribution to Iraq’s output.

3M QS2000 Quick Splice cable joints are supplied with clear and easy to follow installation instructions for HV jointers to follow - high voltage cable jointers should remove cable jacket, lead sheath, copper screen and semi-conductive screen according to the given dimensions. The 3M Cold Shrink PST  (pre-stretched tube) splice is positioned on the long side of the cable cores - the 3M QS2000 cable joint splice body is shrink down onto the 33kV cable by unwinding the spiral. A copper stocking is installed over the 3M cable joint by constant force springs to provide earth continuity onto the lead sheath across the joint.

3M Cold Shrink cable joints are encapsulated with Scotchcast resin via the Resin Pressure Method. 3M Scotchcast resin prevents degradation to the underground cable joint providing mechanical protection and water sealing - the ability of the high voltage cable joints to withstand water ingress was essential due to the periodic flooding of the cable trenches and site conditions in Iraq. The Scotchcast resin seal ensures the 33kV cable joint is suitable for installation in underground (direct burial) and wet conditions.
