LSF low smoke, halogen free resin cable joints suitable for jointing LSF (Low Smoke & Fume), LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) and flame retardant cables to BS6724.

CTL Clearcast LSF resin cable joints are flame retarded, halogen-free with low smoke and fume emission to VO rating of UL94.

LSF cables and cable joints are generally specified where there is a likelihood of toxic fumes being released into confined public spaces in a fire situation - this includes tunnels, theatres, concert halls, sports arenas and educational centres.

Typical underground road and rail tunnel cable jointing applications include power and emergency lighting circuits - this includes straight and branch LSF cable joint kits.

BS6724 is specified for the supply of low voltage (LV) mains electricity to power networks, underground cable systems (direct burial) and in cable ducting - suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

BS6724 Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) SWA Cable is frequently supplied to projects in public areas where fire, smoke emissions and toxic fumes could potentially threaten both lives and equipment. When exposed to fire, the LS0H cable sheath emits very low levels of smoke and non-toxic levels of halogen gas (typically under 0.5% HCl emission)

OHLS Zero Halogen Low Smoke is the trademark of Draka UK while LSF Low Smoke Fume was BICC’s and LSOH Low Smoke Zero Halogen is Pirelli's trademark. These cable terms were coined the with the development of the low emission sheathing materials used on cables specified in BS6724 and more recently in other British Standards.

In the context of BS cables produced by reputable manufacturers, these terms have much the same meaning, as the requirements for ‘low emission of smoke a corrosive gases when affected by fire’ are  rigorous and clearly defined. Where the terms are used more widely it may be necessary to specify the minimum fire performance requirement for each cable in terms of the appropriate Euro Norms EN’s as follows :-

  • Corrosive and Acid Gas Emission – EN 50267
  • Smoke Emission - EN 50268
  • Flame propagation - EN 50265 and EN 50266

LSF vs LSHF - Cables & Accessories. There is a difference.

To clear up the confusion that still remains over the difference between LSF (Low Smoke and Fume) and LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free) cables, FS Cables recorded a very simple cigarette lighter test to show the difference. Using a the same piece of unscreened data cable in both LSF and LSHF version, a simple cigarette lighter flame was applied to both cables.

The results are startling. As you can see the LSF cable very quickly begins to burn and give off black smoke. By contrast, see how the LSHF cable burns cleanly when exposed to the same heat source. The sheath swells and will eventually burn through in the same way as LSF but it is only producing a tiny amount of white smoke and almost no flame.

As a rule of thumb, if the application calls for a data, signal or control cable in LSF, question it. If its a public access building such as an airport, hospital, prison, or hotel, where evacuation in the event of a fire may be restricted you will almost certainly need LSHF cable.
