ATEX is the name given to a set of European Directives relating to Hazardous Area Electrical & Lighting Equipment Installations (Flammable Atmospheres), including lighting, to avoid industrial accident or incident. ATEX Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95), is a directive adopted by the EU under the “New Approach” strategy. The “New Approach” ATEX directive supersedes the “Old Approach” ATEX Directive, the Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Directive, 76/117/EEC – ATEX 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) facilitates free trade in the EC for hazardous area electrical equipment intended to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres. ATEX Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) covers Electrical Equipment installed in hazardous areas with potentially explosive atmospheres created by presence of gases, vapours, mists or dusts - this includes fluorescent, recessed, helideck, LED floodlight, bulkhead and well glass hazardous area lighting.

Zone 1 Hazardous Area – A potentially explosive atmosphere where a mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. 10 to 1000 hours/year.
