BS5308 Instrumentation Cable Part 1 Type 1 and BS5308 Instrumentation Cable Part 1 Type 2 are multipair cables designed to carry voice and data signals.

BS5308 instrumentation cables are also used for connecting instruments and electrical equipment – especially in and around process plants, where transducer-generated signals are transmitted through to panels, controllers and other devices.

BS5308 Cable Part 1 Type 1 and BS5308 Cable Part 1 Type 2 Cables have copper conductors (class 1, 2 or 5) with either PE (Polyethylene), XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) insulation, a tinned copper drain wire, individually screened twisted pairs (with aluminium/polyester tape) and/or a collective screen (also with aluminium/polyester tape).

Both cables are available with a PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) or LSZH sheath. BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 also includes PE bedding and a layer of galvanised steel wire armour.

These cables are not suitable for direct connection to the public mains supply.

  • By what other names is BS5308 cable known?

BS5308 Cable Part 1 Type 1 is also known as Instrumentation Cable, Screened Instrumentation Cable or BS5308 Control Cable.

BS5308 Cable Part 1 Type 2 can be referred to as Instrumentation Cable or Armoured Instrumentation Cable.

  • What is BS5308?

BS5308 is a British Standard, which covers the requirements for a range of instrument signal cables. It is divided into two parts.

Part 1 covers polyethylene insulated cables used mainly by the petroleum industry. It specifies requirements for and dimensions of polyethylene insulated cables in pairs with or without screens – optionally incorporating single wire armour or a lead sheath with single wire armour.

Part 2 covers PVC insulated cables, used mainly in the chemical and petrochemical industries.

  • What is the difference between BS5308 Cable Part 1 Type 1 and BS5308 Cable Part 1 Type 2?

British Standard BS5308 Part 1 defines Type 1 cables as polyethylene insulated and PVC sheathed cables and Type 2 cables as polyethylene insulated, polyethylene bedded, single wire armoured and PVC oversheathed cables.

Type 1 cables are generally used in indoor applications and Type 2 cables are suitable for direct burial projects. There is also a third type of categorisation within the BS5308 Part 1 Standard.

Type 3 covers cables that are polyethylene insulated, PVC bedded, lead alloy sheathed, single wire armoured and PVC oversheathed.

  • Which industries use BS5308 cables?

The demand for voice and data services means BS5308 Instrumentation Cables are used across a whole range of industries including : building and construction, communications and telecoms, water treatment, oil, gas and petrochemical and automation and process control.

  • In what colours is BS5308 cable available?

The sheath on a BS5308 cable is either black or blue.

  • What is a drain wire?

Both BS5308 Part 1 Type 1 Cable and BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 Cable have a drain wire.

This is an uninsulated wire within the cable that is used for making ground connections. It is placed directly beneath and in direct electrical contact with a screen when included.

  • Why are the pairs in BS5308 cable twisted?

Twisting the pairs reduces the amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources or cross talk between neighbouring pairs.

When wires are placed next to each other in parallel there is usually some cross talk – signal interference between the cables, twisting prevents this.
