Consac Cable Jointing
Consac cable is a paper insulated power cable with aluminium sheathing once installed by the DNO's (Distribution Network Operators) for secondary electricity distribution up to 1,000 volts.
Note : BS5593:1978 Specification for impregnated paper-insulated cables with aluminium sheath/neutral conductor and three shaped aluminium phase conductors (CONSAC), 600/1000V for electricity supply was withdrawn by BSI British Standards on 15.12.96.
Wavecon cable is the typical replacement for paper/lead cables in the LV distribution network. Wavecon cable is available as "CNE" and also "SNE" - the construction is (usually) aluminium conductors (three for CNE with a fourth for a neutral in the SNE variant). The outer armouring is a copper tape / copper wire armour, providing either just the earth (SNE) or a combined neutral/earth (CNE), which although meets the requirements for the DNOs cables, may not meet BS7671.
Cable jointers should always wear appropriate PPE and insulating gloves when working on live cables, including eye protection. Jointers should never work on live consac cables without appropriate training - most DNO's insist upon cable isolation and de-energisation prior to working on consac cables.
