CSD Duct Seals - Thames Water DSEAR Program

CSD Duct Seals

CSD Duct Seals

Project Case Study - Thames Water Utilities Limited

Location - 6,000 Sites Across Thames Water Network

Date - 2010/2011

Thames Water have successfully sealed in excess of 3000 cable and pipe ducts using CSD Duct Seals, the "RISE" Duct Seal System. The RISE duct seal system was selected by Thames for their DSEAR maintenance program following successful installations across the Thames network to seal cable and pipe ducts against water, sewerage and gas ingress.

CSD RISE Seals - DSEAR Approved Compliant Cable Pipe Seals

CSD Duct Seals are compliant with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR), reduces the risk to peoples safety from fire and explosion. Thames chose the RISE system based on the simple installation but also high level of integrity CSD duct seals provided.

CSD aided the success by training 7 teams to ensure cable duct seal installations were carried out to a high standard and within a short timescale - a program of quality inspections were also agreed to certify that their cable ducts were correctly sealed and provide high levels of protection in the event of any disaster situation.

With the RISE duct seal system, CSD provides a high performing gas and watertight seal tested to last in excess of 50 years, with the benefit of easily adding or removing cables at anytime in the future. The RISE duct seal, which is included within the current WIMES specification, ensures compliance with the DSEAR regulations, even in misshapen, rectangular and vertical cable ducts, with a large volume of cables passing through.

The CSD Duct Seal System is now being specified and used by the majority of the Water Utility Companies and their contractors to seal water and gas tight ducts across the UK.

CSD RISE Duct Seal - The RISE Duct Seal is a multi-cable and pipe transit sealig system. CSD duct seals provide an effective and simple solution to all fire, gas and watertight duct sealing requirements. CSD duct seals consist of only 2 components, rubber insert sleeves and FIWA sealant.

DSEAR Explained - DSEAR is the UK implementation of the European Union ATEX directive - Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 ( DSEAR ). The intention of the DSEAR Regulation is to reduce the risk of a fatality or serious injury resulting from a "dangerous substance" igniting and potentially exploding. Examples of a "dangerous substance" as defined by DSEAR include sawdust, ethanol vapours and hydrogen gas. The regulation is enforceable by the HSE or local authorities. Copies of Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) 2002, Approved Code of Practice and guidance, L138[1], are available from HSE Books, ISBN 0 7176 2203 7.
