Polypipe Ridgiduct Cable Ducting
for Low & High Voltage 11kV Electricity Cable Ducts
(As used by Central Networks and their agents)
Under the Electricity Safety, Quality, and Continuity Regulations 2002, all underground low and high voltage electricity cables must be installed into PVC cable ducting. Earthenware cable ducting are no longer acceptable.
If you’re carrying out on-site excavation, you’re responsible for the installation of a black PVC duct from the proposed new meter position to the proposed new cable joint position.
The size of the cable duct ducting required will be specified in our quotation.
The cable ducting must be black PVC pipe to conform with Electricity Association (EA) Technical Specification 12-24 – Plastic Cable Ducts for Buried Electrical Cables (11kV).
The manufacturer’s identity, together with the wording “Electricity Cable Duct”, must be clearly marked in white on the outside surface of the cable ducting.
The markings should be repeated three times per metre and should withstand normal handling, storage and installation conditions to remain legible as a safe low/high voltage cable duct.
A draw cord must also be installed with the cable duct.
Cable ducts should be laid at a nominal depth of 450mm below gardens and paths, 750mm below roads and 1,000mm below agricultural land. These measurements should be made from the top of the cable duct to finished ground level.
All cable ducting must be laid with electrical cable warning tape, which should be installed at a depth of 240mm below gardens and paths, 100mm below roads and 650mm below agricultural land.
Note: all cables and cable ducts for LV mains and 11kV circuits are to be installed by Central Networks or its agents.
Polypipe Cable Duct Ducting:
Outside diameter is 38mm. To be used for single-phase low voltage service cables only.
Rigiduct Cable Duct Ducting:
Outside diameter is 125mm. To be used for three-phase high voltage service cable, mains cable and road crossings.
Cable Duct Ducting for Internal Positions:
An internal meter position is only acceptable if the building is listed or sited in a conservation area and the local planning authority has refused an outdoor installation.
For commercial supplies, you must be able to demonstrate that factors such as shop frontage prevent the meter box from being installed on an external wall.
Internal positions require cable duct ducting from underground (450mm deep outside) using a 90°, 450mm radius slow bend cable duct with a minimum diameter of 32mm for single-phase low votlage and 125mm for three-phase high voltage supplies.
Note: all cables and cable ducts for low voltage mains and 11kV circuits are to be installed by Central Networks or its agents.
NOTE - Central Networks was purchased by PPL WEM Holdings plc in April 2011. Central Networks Limited, Central Networks East plc and their affiliated companies are now financially and legally independent from the E.ON group.
Please call T&D to find out more information about Western Power Distribution and its responsibilities with regards to the Midlands (Central Networks) and about the E.ON group.
