Riggers boots have been widely used by electrical utilitiy contractors including linesmen and jointers for field use - recent industry wide moves to ban Rigger boots has been triggered as a result of numerous safety related incidents that have been attributed to the style and design of the Rigger boot.
Rigger boots were traditionally developed for use on the pil rigs to enable the wearer to easily kick the boots free should the wearer fall into the water - other trades soon adopted the Rigger boot favouring the comfort afforded by the fur lining and the soft pliable structure of the boot. The ease of fitting/removal of the boots were also a siginificant factor affecting selection.
This ease of removal for which Rigger boots was originally favoured by the power utilities for use by their LV-HV (low and high voltage) jointers, switchgear and linesmen, is now considered as a siginificant and dangerous weakness of the Rigger boot.
For example, many ankle injuries have been attributed to Rigger boots due to the limited ankle support they afford and the inability to adjust the boot to provide support for the foot. In particular, concrete layers have been known to lose their boots whilst laying concrete resulting in cement burns to their feet and various tradesmen have lost their boots on sites with poor ground conditions allowing them to step unprotected onto debris and resulting in foot injuries - these are several reasons given by the power utilities and DNO's for the ban on Rigger boots.
