HV high voltage heat shrink cable joints for single core cables are tested and qualified as outlined in Cenelec standards HD 628 S1 and 629.1 S2 : 2006. This testing criteria encompasses VDE0279 and IEC60502 and following voltage classes for HV cable joints : 3.8/6.6 (7.2kV), 6.35/11 (12kV), 8.7/15 (17.5kV), 12.7/22 (24kV) and 19/33 (36kV).

If single core aluminimum wire armoured (AWA) 33kV cables are earthed only at one end, a voltage will appear at the opposite end of the cable run - if both HV ends are earthed, circulating currents will be induced. The is determined by i) length of 33kV cable installation, ii) current in the cable conductor and frequency, iii) proximity of the other two 33kV cables, presuming HV cables are installed in trefoil formation and iv) mutual inductance per phase. On long 33kV cable runs potentially lethal over voltages can be induced and standard earthing methods do not provide adequate high voltage cable protection. A simple method to reduce or eliminate this effect is to divide the 33kV cable run into three equal sections and request the trained HV cable jointer install 33kV cross bond kits available from Thorne & Derrick UK.
