Press Release : Cablofil To Make Water Industry Splash Following Wimes Approval

Cablofil has become the first steel wire containment system to gain approval from WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification) for use in water industry applications.

Already a market leader in the electrical sector and now also used widely for mechanical installations, the Cablofil system is the steel wire tray product that meets the strict criteria set by WIMES. WIMES will incorporate the specification criteria for steel wire tray containment for water industry applications into Issue 4 of WIMES 3.02 (LV Electrical Installations) when it is issued in 2011 and, in the meantime, the organisation has published interim specification requirements for steel wire cable tray which are effective as of March 2010.

Explains WIMES co-ordinator, Roger Marlow: “Cablofil presented a very convincing case for the use of steel wire tray containment to the WIMES Electrical Working Group and following some discussion we decided to approve steel wire systems for water industry applications. However, only steel wire systems that meet the criteria we have outlined are suitable for use in the water industry, so long as they are not prohibited by an individual water company’s particular specification.”

The criteria set by WIMES includes a stipulation that the steel wire tray must comply with the requirements of BS EN 61537: 2007 - Cable management and should be manufactured from 4 mm diameter (minimum) steel wires, welded together into a ‘mesh type’ construction. The requirements also state that only steel wire tray with a T-welded safety edge, such as that found on the Cablofil system, is approved for use in water industry applications and stresses that the system must be erected in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions using only proprietary accessories and supports.

Comments managing director of Cablofil UK, Paul Courson: “Independent tests have demonstrated that the Cablofil system is ideal for water industry applications and the range includes a wide range of materials and coatings to ensure that we have a system suitable for all water industry operating environments. We are delighted that Cablofil meets the strict criteria set by WIMES and we look forward to extending the flexibility, ease of use, speed of installation and cost reduction benefits of steel wire tray to the water industry.”

The Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications (WIMES) define the requirements for mechanical and electrical equipment used in the UK Water Industry. The specifications take the form of descriptive text coupled with data sheets.

The WIMES documents have been produced with the co-operation and approval of the following Pump Centre member companies:

* Anglian Water
* Dwr Cymru (Welsh Water)
* Northern Ireland Water
* Northumbrian Water
* Scottish Water
* Severn Trent Water
* South West Water
* Southern Water
* Thames Water
* United Utilities
* Veolia Water
