Paper & Polymeric Lead Sheathed Cable Joints 600/1000v-3.3kV

Paper or polymeric (PILC or XLPE) lead sheathed cables are specified for power distribution in the oil, gas, petroleum and chemical industries where underground cables are exposed to waterlogging and corrosive liquids and vapours.

Cable construction including lead sheath cover protects against penetration and degradation of electric cable insulation.

SPS Heat Shrink Joints

Heat shrink cable joints for Paper Insulated Lead Covered (PILC) cables include heat shrink breakout boots, core tubes and lead sheath earthing kits for 2, 3 and 4 core PILC /SWA power cables to BS6480.

BS6480 Standard is for impregnated paper insulated lead or lead alloy sheathed cables up to and including 3.3kV.

EEMUA 133 Standard is for underground armoured cables protected against solvent penetration and corrosive attack.

Heat shrink PILC cable joints suit 25sqmm, 35sqmm, 50sqmm, 70sqmm, 95sqmm, 120sqmm, 150sqmm, 185sqmm, 240sqmm and 300sqmm stranded copper conductor, steel wire armoured, 600/1000v and 3.3kV cables.

Heat shrink jointing kits are also available for XLPE insulated lead sheathed cables for petrochemical site installations - this covers the cable jointing of EEMUA 133 type cables.

SPS Heat Shrink Joints to Suit Low Voltage Cables

Heat Shrink Cable Joints, PILC Cables - Cable Jointing Instruction

1. Ensure PILC cables overlap before preparing the cables to the stripping dimensions according to Cable Jointing Instruction.

Remove belt papers to within 10mm of lead sheath. After the lead sheath has been removed, "bell" the lead with suitable LV cable jointers tool.

2. Use cable jointers cleaning wipes to wipe the excess grease from the cable cores and position the heat shrink core tubes and shrink into position with heat source (heat shrink gas torch or gun).

3. Ensure the lead sheath is clean and grease free before continuing jointing cables.

Position the 4 legged (4 core) heat shrink breakout boot well down into the PILC cable crutch. Start heat shrinking from the centre of the cable breakout to the lead sheath, then the legs to the cores.

4. Slide the heat shrink outer tube along the the cable armour clamps down one of the cable ends - fit the armour support rings and position the connector insulation tubes down the long prepared cable cores.

5. Using correct cable jointers tools, crimp or solder the cable connectors removing any sharp edges and ensuring they are grease free.

6. Position the connector insulation tubes centrally and with a suitable heat source start heat shrinking from the centre to one end at a time ensuring the flame is kept on the move all around the heat shrink tubes.

7. Squeeze the cable cores together and wrap with heavy duty black tape with stretch and half width overlap over the joint gap extending onto the 4 core cable breakout skirt.

8. Lay the earth strap across the cable joint gap and secure to the lead sheath with the roll springs supplied. Earth strap will be bonded to the cable armours at later stage of cable joint installation.

9. Wrap the aluminium earth cage tightly around the cable joint and secure to the cable armours with clamps provided. Apply PVC tape to sharp points.

10. De-grease the cable sheaths with the cleaning tissues provided. Position the outer heat shrink tube centrally over the cable joint gap.

Starting from the centre, heat shrink to one end at a time. Keep the heat shrink flame on the move to ensure an even wall thickness - sealant should be visible at heat shrink tube ends of the cable joint.

11. Allow the completed heat shrink cable joint kit to cool before applying any mechanical strain.
