FP McCann has been awarded a prestigious supply contract as part of National Grid’s replacement 400kV high voltage substation at Deeside. The new substation, scheduled for completion in 2018, will play a vital role in the reinforcement of the high-voltage transmission infrastructure in northwest England, and pave the way for the connection of new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power links under construction. The existing Deeside 400kV air insulated switchgear (AIS) substation was constructed in the 1960s and had been identified for replacement.

Initial supplies to the project have consisted of 600mm x 600mm straight concrete cable troughs together with Tees and Corner units. The contract falls within the scope of the Electricity Alliance Central (EAC), in which ABB is working as part of a consortium with Atkins and Morgan Sindall to deliver major enhancements to National Grid’s 400kV substation infrastructure.

McCann's Easi-Duct precast concrete cable troughs being installed by Morgan Sindall, are to carry high voltage cabling to and from a new gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation. The access troughs are buried flush with the surface to protect the power network from accidental or malicious damage, but allow for easy access for maintenance and repair. The high strength, load bearing, reinforced units are non-conductive and chemically resistant. Flush fitting lids are supplied in either precast concrete, GRP or steel tray and are tested for loading group classes as set out in BS EN 124.

The contract in it's first phase, will eventually provide a grid connection for Eirgrid’s East–West Interconnector, a 530 MW HVDC link between Ireland and the UK currently under construction by ABB, and due to be commissioned in 2012. Deeside has also been nominated as the optimum connection point for the proposed 2,000 MW Western HVDC Link to connect England and Scotland via a subsea cable.

Keith Jones, FP McCann's National Special Products Sales Manager comments, "This is a high profile National Grid contract that will continue to deliver benefits to our cable duct division for the foreseeable future. Morgan Sindall is a major contractor in the power and utilities sector and we are working closely with them to secure other infrastructure projects"
