Cold Shrink Terminations Installation
Cold shrink terminations installation involves fewer steps than the traditional heat shrink termination method - the effficiency of cold shrink terminations derives from a reduced part count compared to heat shrink terminations. The heating step is eliminated, along with heat shrink gas torches, burners and cannisters - reducing risk and potential cable jointer error. The simpler nature of cold shrink termination installation reduces field mistakes - 3M test reports document 30 to 50 years life cycle expectation for cold shrink terminations according to accelerated age testing.
Cold Shrink History
3M developed and patented cold shrink insulation technology in 1968 for cable terminating, jointing, splicing and insulation applications - the first cold shrink insulators were known as pre-stretched tubes (PSTs) or PST zip-core tubes. Consisting of an expanded rubber tube with a removable plastic core, cold shrink terminations satisfied a demand for a faster and simpler cable termination, splice or joint.
