Explosion Proof Barrier Glands

 

Explosion proof barrier glands provide a flameproof compound seal, outer sheath seal and universal armour clamp for steel wire armoured (SWA) and galvanised steel braided (GSWB) cable termination. A barrier gland is an Ex d cable gland incorporating a compound filled chamber sealing around the individual cores of the cable to maintain the flameproof integrity of the electrical equipment. A barrier gland must be used where the standard method of cable glanding (elastomeric seals) an Ex cable entry is considered unlikely to maintain the integrity of flameproof electrical equipment and contain an explosion within the electrical enclosures due either to cable construction or degree of explosion risk. 

Prysmian Barrier Glands (explosion proof) are suitable for the termination of steel wire armoured (SWA), galvanised steel wire braided (GSWB) and OCMA type cables with lead covered sheathing.

Explosion proof barrier glands are suitable for barrier glanding unarmoured polymeric sheath cables in  Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22 hazardous areas.

 

Explosion Proof Equipment in Hazardous Areas : 3 elements are required in order to create a hazardous area : i) air ii) flammable gases, vapours, mists, dusts iii) source of ignition. An explosive atmosphere is created when air and a flammable medium mix such that a rise in temperature or an electrical spark produces an explosion. An explosive atmosphere can self ignite if the local temperature rises above the self-ignition temperature in the hazardous area, this varies for different flammable mediums (gasses and dusts). Explosive atmospheres are caused by a mixture of gases, vapours, mists, dusts and air - it the explosive atmosphere is caused by gases, vapours and mists the hazardous area is coded G. If the explosive atmosphere is caused by dusts the hazardous area is coded D.

Explosion Groups - explosion protected hazardous area electrical equipment, including plugs and sockets, is classified in terms of the ignition temperature, the ignition capability and flame transmission capacity of the explosive atmosphere in which it operates. The hazardous area classification for electrical equipment is divided into 2 groups depending on whether located above or below ground : Group I or 1 - for use below ground in areas susceptible to firedamp, Group II or 2 for all other areas. Group II hazardous area electrical equipment is further divided into three sub groups depending on the ignition and flame transmission characteristics of the explosive hazard - these sub-groups are desginated as IIA, IIB and IIC zones.
