3M STFF Shield - London Underground LU Standard 1-085 Approved

3M STFF Shield products are designed for use with all inline polymeric cold shrink and resin joints - this includes LV, 600/1000 volts, 3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11kV and 33kV cable joints and cable abandonment kits.

3M STFF Shield is suitable for single and three core polymeric cold shrink joints, as well as for cable abandonment applications at low voltage.

The addition of the 3M STFF Shield will allow standard cable joints and accessories to be installed in areas such as underground rail, tunnels and any application where flame retardant, low toxicity cable jointing solutions are required.

3M STFF Cable Joint Shield for Low Voltage Power Cable Joints

  • Halogen free cable joints
  • Tested to London Underground Standard 1-085 for rail cable jointing
  • Smoke emission and toxic fume emission testing has been carried out following the test methodology for BS EN50268-2:2000 and BS 6853:1999 Annex B.2
  • Compliant with EU directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS) and EU regulation 1907/2007/EC (REACH)

3M LVI-3 (Power) and LVI-3-IC (Control & Instrumentation) Resin Cable Joints

Flame retardant, halogen free, and hydro-carbon resistant include Scotchcast 1402FR Resin.

Cable joints suitable for direct buried applications (underground cable joints) and exposed petrochemical applications or ground conditions with high levels of hydro carbon contamination. 

Used for many years with fire resistant cables. 3M 1402FR Scotchcast Resin has been tested according to IEC60695. 

Underground cable joints are specified for hydro-carbon resistance rather than fire resistance performance for direct burial applications - note, standard polyurethane resin cable joints will overtime degrade to possible point of cable joint failure due to long term exposure to aggressive hydro-carbons.

3M 1402FR Scotchcast resin cable joints are designed to provide reliable performance in oil, gas and petrochemical cable installations, including Zone 1 and Zone 2 where cable joints are exposed to oil and gas (mist or vapour). 

3M LC Cold Shrink Joints + STFF Fire Resistant Shield  - halogen free, cold shrink inner cable joint with 3M STFF protection sleeve.

3M cable joints are suitable for cable trays and cable containment areas where a bulky resin cable joint is not practical, this option has a much slimmer profile and compact cable joint with space and weight savings for low voltage power cable installations.

This type of 3M cable joint is not suitable for direct burial as the 3M STFF sleeve will absorb moisture and hydrocarbons over time. Not hydrocarbon resistant.

The 3M STFF has been approved by Network Rail and LUL for use in cable tunnels where fire resistance is very important. Also used for cable installation projects for cable joints in cable trays.

3M LVI-3 Resin Joint (Hydro-Carbon Resistant) + STFF Fire Resistant Sleeve

This solution is not tested. 3M are unable to comment on long term performance.

In theory, the 3M resin cable joint plus STFF sleeve cable joint solution gives extra fire protection to a hydro-carbon resistant resin joint that will not be buried.

Definitely not suitable for buried cable joints, as the 3M STFF sleeve will absorb moisture and hydrocarbons over time.
