Using Cold Shrink cable joints reduces the risk of cable jointer error or causing damage to the insulation of the MV-HV cable and ensures a constant radial pressure is applied to the cable for the duration of the cable joints life. All 3M Cold Shrink cable joints include built in components to ensure excellent electrical insulation, mechanical protection, stress control or adequate earth potential over the screens.

The Premium 3M Cold Shrink cable joint range are supplied with an integrated semi-conductive electrode removing the need for the Jointer to use tapes and is available for almost any cable configuration, insulation type and conductor size up to 72kV – this includes 6.6kV, 11kV and 33kV power cable networks.
Joints from the Premium range by 3M Electrical are compatible with the following International Cable Standards: IEC 60502-2, BS6622 (PVC), BS7835 (LSZH Low Smoke Zero Halogen), BS7870-4.10 (Including Triplex), DIN VDE 0276 Part 620 (N2XS2Y / N2XS(F)2Y / N2XS(FL)2Y) Cables in the following medium voltage classes;

QS1000
3M QS1000 92-AV6x0-3/C Series Cold Shrink Premium Joints are designed for inline cable jointing up to 15kV Umax voltage class – 3 core polymeric power cable systems with copper tape screen, steel wire armour (SWA), galvanised steel wire braid (GSWB), with or without lead sheath, according to HD 620 (IEC 60502).
3M QS1000 COLD SHRINK SERIES – KIT CONTENTS
3M 92-AV6x0-3/C Inline Joint Series includes the Cold Shrink QS1000 silicone splice body with:
- Integrated stress control device
- Conductive electrode
- Silicone elastomer insulation
- Outer semi-conductive layer
- Copper screen sleeve
- Constant force springs and/or lead sheath connection components, and mechanical shearbolt connectors
CS Outer Protection Kits are available separately, in Cold Shrink versions for Polymeric applications, alternatively Mould Shell & Scotchcast Resin packs for transition jointing, or when used in hazardous areas.
3M Cold Shrink joints should only ever be installed by Competent MV HV Jointers using the correct cable jointers tools.
Using 3M QS1000 Cable Joints to Connect Medium & High Voltage Power Cables up to 15kV
1. Cold Shrink tubes are positioned onto the HV power cable to provide outer sheath protection and re-jacketing of the power cable sheath
2. The cable conductors are jointed using either crimp connectors or mechanical shearbolt type, such as Pfisterer Sicon
3. The Cold Shrink joint body with integrated stress control provides a high voltage cable joint for XLPE/EPR cables, up to 15kV.
4. Once the HV Jointer has installed the Cold Shrink protection tube the cable joint is completed and can be energised immediately.

The 92AV range of Cold Shrink Joints from 3M Electrical are suitable for the Straight & Transition Jointing of Polymeric (XLPE) or Paper (PILC) insulated 3 core cables with Copper Tape Screen and Lead Sheath with Steel Wire Armour (SWA), 50-400sqmm.

Protection of the Cold Shrink Joint can be provided by 1) Cold Shrink Outer Protective Jacket Sleeve (CS Kits) – the outer protection kits are thick-walled EPDM Cold Shrink outer re-jacketing tubes to provide mechanical protection and moisture sealing of the completed cable joint or 2) Mould/Shell & Encapsulating Resin – standard industrial application resin (470W) or high performance (1402FR) resin is available for halogen free, flame retardant and hydro-carbon resistant cable installations located in potentially explosive atmospheres and hazardous areas (Zones 1 & Zone 2).
The Simple Application Of A 3M Cold Shrink Cable Joint
1. Park the 3M Cold Shrink splice body onto the prepared cable, connect the cores and clean cables thoroughly. | 2. Thoroughly grease the connected cable in preparation for the cable splice body. | 3. Once in position, begin to remove the inner coil from the cable joint body. | 4. For extra peace of mind, take advantage of the fact that cable splice body position is easily checked. |
5. Place the earth stocking over the splice body. Ground and secure with 3M Constant Force Springs. | 6. Insulate the constant force springs with Scotch 23 Rubber Splicing Tape and then overlay with Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape 2228. | 7. Position the pre-parked 3M Cold Shrink Outer Protection Tube over the stocking and beginning to remove the inner supporting core. | 8. Continue to remove the inner core until the outer tube is fully shrink, completing the cable joint. |
